Ballet for the Imperfect Body

When it comes to dance, our bodies are the ultimate instrument. As we tune our bodies to the music, we strive for something bigger and better than ourselves. In a way, there is nothing quite freeing than letting your movements do the talking. When words fail, music fills that void with ease and style.

However, many people often let their doubts stop them from taking that first leap into dancing. Whether it’s self-doubt or body image issues—I’m here to remind you that your doubts are your first obstacle.

One of the most common problems people fear trying to dance is because they feel they do not have the “right body.” For many, when you think of an ideal body for ballet, you’d likely picture a person with perfect posture, beautiful feet, and a graceful neck.

However, what if I told you that not every ballerina started that way? In fact, a few of the best dancers came to be because of their previously imperfect frames. With time and practice, these fledglings eventually became high fliers where the sky’s the limit! While their bodies were less than “perfect,” they overcame such obstacles without injuring themselves.

As a child with bowed legs and spine issues, I assure you that these are not empty words. If it weren’t for the Revolutionary Principles of Movement, I might have never discovered another side of me. What the RPM teaches is not about starting with the perfect body but making your imperfect body achieve things you never thought were possible. Through physiology and kinesthetics, we can apply these well-researched principles with confidence. Founded by Jo Anna Kneeland but refined by Ruth Petrinovic, there is a way to teach ballet holistically.

What is RPM?

The Revolutionary Principles of Movement, or RPM, is a new way to teach and learn ballet for a more diverse class. It was founded by Jo Anna Kneeland and Ruth Petrinovic, who have developed the study since the 1960s.

Unlike traditional ballet classes, the RPM is less rigorous and more about using science to help your body achieve these seemingly daunting moves. RPM offers realistic results minus unrealistic expectations in a world where most ballerinas are expected to be perfect from start to finish. This method is ideal for anyone afraid of trying ballet for reasons they have zero control over.
